That’s why it is important to consider best practices when boosting your career with social media.

 

Career social networking takes place online and off. Getting it right in both places can make all the difference. When it comes to online social networking, you need to make sure you are being social in the right places.

 

1. Use LinkedIn and Google+ – For business professionals and job seekers, LinkedIn is the best place to be. While Facebook and Twitter might be fun, according to the 6th annual Social Recruiting Survey from Jobvite, 94% of all recruiting professionals use LinkedIn to vet potential candidates.

 

LinkedIn allows you to have your resume available to your network 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This can be a huge advantage as long as you keep your profile professional. This is not the place for pictures of your kids or your pets.

 

Google+ is also a great place to feature your abilities and achievements. You should add companies and individuals that you are interested in networking with to your circles. Often, they will add you back.

 

Once you are in their circle, any content or updates you add to your Google+ account will rank well in their Google searches.

 

Be sure to add links to relevant work and update your profiles often. Your profile will be viewed more often when it is updated regularly. Joining groups and participating in them is another great way to get noticed and expand your network.

2. Take it Offline – Social networking takes place offline, as well. While it can seem easier to network from the comfort of your home, sometimes, getting away from the computer and meeting face-to-face with others goes a long way to reaching your goals.

 

Nowadays, there is a networking group for any industry or interest. By attending local meet ups, you can move your resume and career to the top of the stack by getting to know others at a deeper level.

 

While an online profile is a great start, it doesn’t give you as much opportunity to speak at-length with others in your field of interest. Face-to-face networking does. Just be prepared to listen more than you speak. By showing a true interest in others, you will find they have more of an interest in you.

 

3. Be Consistent – If you want to use social media for your career advancement, you need to be consistent. Checking in on LinkedIn every so often will not get you far. You don’t need to spend a great deal of time on social media, but you should set aside a small part of your week — or day — to regularly check on your social media profiles and networks.

 

For example, you might want to plan to update your profile once a week, comment on three group posts weekly, and plan to attend two offline networking opportunities each month.

 

 

Social networking is about making connections. If you approach using social media with a “What’s in it for me?” attitude, you will not be successful. By helping others, you will quickly become the “go-to person” within your social networking circles and sphere of industry, which is the best way to obtain your career goals.
